How to Start Needlepoint

How to Start Needlepoint

Starting needlepoint is easier than it looks. With a few basic supplies and some quiet time, you can create something beautiful and enjoy the process. This guide walks you through everything you need to begin.

What You’ll Need

  • A hand-painted canvas

  • Tapestry needles (size 20–22 for 13 mesh, 22–24 for 18 mesh)

  • Thread or fiber such as Silk & Ivory or Essentials by Tilli Tomas

  • Scissors

  • Stretcher frame and tacks (optional)

Cut your thread to about 18 to 24 inches. If it’s too long, it can start to fray, and if it’s too short, you’ll find yourself re-threading often.

Before starting your first stitch, you’ll need to anchor your thread. The easiest way is to make a small knot and bring your needle down through the canvas about an inch away from where you plan to begin stitching, usually near the top right corner of your design. Stitch up through the front of the canvas through your first hole, then back down diagonally to make your first stitch. The knot will sit on the front of the canvas, and your stitches will cover and secure the thread that runs along the back. As you get closer to the knot, you can clip it away and continue stitching as normal.

A simple place to start is with the tent stitch, sometimes called the continental stitch. Bring your needle up through the back of the canvas, then down diagonally into the next hole. Continue one stitch at a time and keep your tension even as you go.

Another common option is the basketweave stitch. It looks similar to the tent stitch but is worked diagonally across the canvas in a repeating pattern. It creates a smooth, even surface and is the stitch most people use for larger areas. You can learn more about the basketweave stitch here.

Making Progress

Don’t worry about perfection. Each stitch is part of the process. You’ll find your rhythm naturally as you go. Once your piece is finished, it can be framed, turned into a pillow, or finished however you like.
